How do you even find information on this case? There's nothing in my online news search except an odd snippet. All the other information comes from dissident JW sites, and of course I can't cite these when trying to convince JWs that there is even such a person as Candace Conti...who, and elder told me, is a made up person, made up by apostates!!!

I Didn't See That Coming
by Wholly ini was raised on air force bases in the us and asia until i was 10 or 11. my mother divorced my father while he was on an unaccompanied tour in turkey and hooked up with my uncle.
she married him and his children became our step-brothers and sisters.
i saw my father once when he got back to the states and not again until almost 30 years later.. after two years, my uncle put his children in an orphanage and my mother dispersed her children to the four winds so she could be free to be with my uncle without all the problems eight children who hated each other brought.. my story begins in 1977 in an old farm house in corinth, kentucky, without running water or heat, just electricity for lights and cooking.

Welcome! The truth is in the Bible only and not in some cult. We all have experience with it, many have been messed up by it, and we can help each other. Be free of fear of Armageddon and read that Jesus came to save, not kill. I too was afraid of Armageddon, constantly begging God not to kill my brother's baby because her parents weren't JWs. It's so messed up, but thankfully it's not the message of Jesus!

part one is the first criteria of cult control, behaviour control.

I used to have Steve Hassan's first cult book and I gave it away! Argh, kicking myself!

Australia boasts the best cookie (biscuit we call em) EVER: the mighty Tim Tam. Tourists leave Australia with bag loads of the things. You keep your Girl Scout cookies, and I'll medicate myself with a packet of Tim Tams.
Tim Tams are a girl's best friend!

The significance of Sparlock
by botchtowersociety inthe watchtower has depicted sparlock as a commercial plastic toy to be thrown into the garbage with impunity.. i submit to you all that he is something far greater.
sparlock represents all the hopes and dreams of jw children everywhere.
he is the magic of childhood.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but Sparlock is like some sort of mascot for the dissident JW movement. He's gained his own following.

Ah yes I've heard about the child abuse thing where they go to the elders rather than the police. Perhaps this is an example.
And Robert, that's a good idea of yours to back up my work with quotes. There are others here who are much better at finding quotes, so if they'd like to I'd be more than glad! I've heard so many quotes over the years they all become one huge ideology and it's hard for me to pin down just one.
This is a part of a larger project I'm working on, so the more input the merrier.

What do you mean?! I ALWAYS go to the beach after service and wear long pants and button up shirts while I play a game in the sand with my family! Sometimes I wear button up long sleeve shirts too!
by Crisis of Conscience inthe wts likes to imply how jws should dress in and outside of the hall.
you always want to set an example.. so i couldn't help but share this beauty in the january 15th, 2013, study edition of the watchtower.
i always go to the beach like this!

Yep I live on the Gold Coast and people who are sun smart dress more like the man in the Awake. Never chinos or slacks! Boardshorts and ras shirts are common, and most parents cover their children up to prevent sun burn and cancer. Many families even bring pop-up tents to rest under. Here on the Gold Coast, one of Australia's top tourist destinations, people wear all sorts of things. For beach cricket, which I've played with my non-JW family on occasion, you wear your boardies and a t-shirt or tank top of some kind.
As for JWs playing beach cricket, they wear their boardies and a t-shirt or tank top of some kind.
People walking their dogs on the beach wear their boardies and a t-shirt or tank top of some kind.

This is a project I've started to prove I'm not an apostate: mapping BITE to WTS. Part one is the first criteria of cult control, Behaviour Control. Feel free to add to these subheadings too, as many of you were in a lot longer than me and have been in bethel or been elders.
Behavior Control
1. Regulation of individual’s physical reality
a. Where, how and with whom the member lives and associates with
JWs are encouraged only associate with Witnesses and avoid others as much as possible; even in the congregation, associate with ‘good’ associations. Work functions, clubs and such are not considered appropriate association and are highly discouraged. Members are encouraged to keep association with non-JW family members low too.
b. What clothes, colors, hairstyles the person wears
There are guidelines of acceptable hairstyles, unspoken rules about women’s clothes, written and unwritten rules about what not to wear and certain privileges withheld because of facial hair etc. Men have to wear suits and ties to the meetings or they will be looked upon as spiritually weak and will not get any ‘priviledges’. In some countries the standard is more relaxed because of local custom for instance, men can wear sarongs to the meeting in the Torres Strait Islands.
c. What food the person eats, drinks, adopts, and rejects
Anything with blood in it for example, black pudding.
d. How much sleep the person is able to have
Not applicable to my knowledge
e. Financial dependence
Not applicable to my knowledge
f. Little or no time spent on leisure, entertainment, vacations
For JWs, the purpose of recreation, entertainment and holidays is to relax/refresh you for more witnessing. It is held to have no intrinsic value. Anything that doesn’t make for more witnessing is considered a waste of time.
2. Major time commitment required for indoctrination sessions and
group rituals –There are many commitments for the JW to keep: twice weekly meetings, ‘pre study for said meetings in a number of WT publications’, family worship whereby families are expected to work together on a Bible/WT project, 3x year assemblies, daily paragraph from WT in daily text.
3. Need to ask permission for major decisions
Not specifically, though many JWs will consult the elders on a particular course of action for advice.
4. Need to report thoughts, feelings and activities to superiors
JWs are expected to confess major sins to elders: fornication, over-drinking, viewing porn, etc.
5. Rewards and punishments (behavior modification techniques- positive
and negative).JW congregations use Withholding of brothers’ privileges, removing a brother’s privileges, and punishments like public reproving and disfellowshipping.
6. Individualism discouraged; group think prevails
“Independent thinking” vilified as a Satanic trait; JWs are told to obey and trust GB without questions, discouraged from making independent Bible study groups and can expect the elders to discipline them in some way if they talk to other JWs about private interpretation of the Bible. All individuals, regardless of skill, talent, shortcomings or preferences have to engage in the same activities and are expected to place them before their own likes such as arts, sports or hobbies.
7. Rigid rules and regulations
JWs have many rules that go beyond the Bible such as they must have chaperones when dating, there are strict protocols for meetings and assemblies, strict criteria for gaining certain titles, and quotas of hours in the door-to-door work associated with titles such as ‘pioneer’.,
8. Need for obedience and dependency
JWs are instilled with unquestioning obedience of FDS aka GB. To question the GB or WTS or say anything critical of the publications is considered disobedience.
I will add the other criteria as I have them finished/are able to put up my one post per day.

The Watchtower Study At A Glance. What's "Christian Activity"?
by ÁrbolesdeArabia injanuary 13, 213 magazine focus is avoding anything that could lessen your "christian activity".
what is christian activity used in every other paragraph?
witnesses are told in a subtle way, if their jobs are high paying they probably are not doing things jehovah's ways.

I told my husband as he was trying to prestudy this article that it's the sort of thing that the Wt says, setting all our boundaries for us and treating us like spiritual primary schoolers! We aren't free to use our God given, Christian conscience.
The part with the pioneer who doesn't go out at night and is up at 6 each morning is designed to make the rest of us feel we're making no sacrifice at all. Also Jesus and Paul et al never spoke about how much recreation is appropriate but the Wt, meetings n assemblies always talk about what entertainment and how much we should have, and this article is indicative of this. We are always caused to doubt everything we do by articles like this.

by dissonance_resolved ini'm a born in, baptized as a young teenager, whole family is jw.

I'm in a similar boat honey. As for me, I'm living by Christian principles, discussing Bible verses with him and showing him love. Love is the best thing. Also, it's tempting to go for the throat with the GB etc issues since you now feel so passionately about them, but it can push him into a corner so resist the temptation.
There's a section on JWfacts.com about helping loved ones, and the author of the page told me to go slowly. Another person mentioned in another thread that you have time on your side. Right now you're in the JW mindset (and so am I! It's so hard to break!) that everything is URGENT because the big A is around the corner so you have no time, no time! I know what it's like: I never planned for a holiday or anything more than about 9-10 months in advance. But realise now, that the sense of fear you have of running out of time is actually going to be allayed now, and patience is a virtue. Also prayer. Just because the WT's made a meal of the Bible's message, does not mean God is not real. Jesus is real. I've been an Atheist, then a JW (still nominally am) and now a Christian follower of Jesus. So some good advice I received recently is to get to where you want to be spiritually, then reach a hand to help your husband join you.
I'm in the same boat as you sister, and I know that when the scales fall away you're indignant at the big scam that's been pulled on you and your first instinct is to snatch your husband out of the fire. And because we can see it's a scam, we assume others will too when presented with the facts. That is not the case as this is an emotional issue too, and it's tied up with your whole life and all your friends in the congregation, and if you're born in, your family too. Also, he may not know any other way and so it's a comfort thing to stick with what you know.
Hope this helps. Send me a PM if you wanna chat. I check it every day.
